As mentioned in the Flight Surgeon Log, on October 9, 1943, Leonard McCleary received the Air Medal. Additionally, after the Squadron Commander, Major James R. Anderson, was injured on Octobet 10, 1943, Captain McCleary became the Commanding Officer of the squadron until Major Stanley R. Bailey joined the squadron in November 1943.

Leonard McCleary was one of the original VMF - 213 pilots that survived the three Combat tours with VMF - 213. See the End of Tour Survivors. From the best and only information available at this time, after the war, Leonard McCleary went back to school and received an engineering degree and worked in the aerospace industry. He married, had nine children, and lived in San Jose, CA. He passed away in 1988.
